Before investing in a heating system make sure your house is well insulated. A dollar spent on insulation is better than a dollar spent on heating as any heating system will be expensive to run if you have a poorly insulated or draughty house.
New Zealand lags behind the 8-ball as far as Central Heating is concerned, and many homes in the Southern Lakes area (particularly those built at a time when it was mainly a summer holiday destination) are heated unevenly and poorly insulated.
The World Health Organisation recommends your home should be heated to the temperatures shown.

GAS COOKING
Gas cook tops are a very cost effective cooking option, with a 9kg bottle lasting around 6 months on a hob top.

INSTANT HOT WATER
There are a lot of options available when it comes to gas heating, from flueless convectors (which are smaller and less expensive to install than heat pumps and will heat the same area), to gas fires that look like an open fire but without the mess or need to split and store wood.
Hydronic central heating systems can not only heat your home through radiators and under floor heating, but also handle your hot water as well.
Flueless convectors and balanced flued space heaters are inexpensive to install and take up much less room than a heat pump (with the added bonus of not needing to defrost all over your walkways). They use the same energy any time of year and provide heat when you need it. They also provide heat quick and warm large spaces with ease.
Be warned however, as gas heating can be a pricey option here in the Southern Lakes with the availability of mainly bottles LPG (anything you read about gas being cost effective for heating probably comes from the North Island where they have reticulated Natural Gas available).
